A positive transition experience at any phase can set a child up to thrive and succeed at the next stage of their education. This is particularly difficult at the moment given the restrictions of COVID-19 but whilst the experience of transition will be different in 2020, it can still achieve the aim of giving every child the very best possible start to their new school life.
Each school operates in its own context, with unique challenges and opportunities. Our resources are designed to offer an insight into potential ways of working, rather than promote particular approaches. Any transition plans that a school makes MUST be in response to robust risk assessment and should reflect what is appropriate for their context.
Colleagues from primary and secondary phases have been working together with SAfE, under the auspices of the Recovery Planning group, to develop a pack of information and guidance in support of Yr 6 to Yr 7 transition.
This is a collection of ideas, exemplars and resources for supporting the process of transition from KS2 to KS3 during the COVID-19 pandemic. They have been generously shared by a range of primary, junior and secondary schools from across Surrey.

Young Minds have also created a short film resource that reassures children that they’re not alone when it comes to their worries about secondary school, that there are ways to cope with change and there are people to talk to when things get difficult.
The film is for schools to show their pupils as they’re transitioning from primary to secondary school. This could be played on ‘transition day’, or to Year 7s in the first week at their new school or to Year 6s who are just about to move up.
