Educational Equity Toolkit: Ethnicity

Stereotyping, cultural insensitivity, and a lack of representation in educational materials can contribute to a sense of exclusion for students from ethnically diverse backgrounds. Additionally, language barriers or differing learning styles might affect how information is given and understood in the classroom. Systemic issues such as unequal access to resources, biased assessment methods, and institutionalised discrimination may disproportionately impact certain ethnic groups, limiting their educational opportunities. Making an effort to promote cultural sensitivity in teaching practices, diversifying the curriculum, and implementing inclusive policies are some of the ways that educators can create a more equitable learning environment for all students.


The impact of socioeconomic disadvantage on learning is pernicious. Unchecked, we know that this gap widens incrementally from early years throughout a pupil’s educational career. In Surrey, our challenge is often finding ways to support small numbers of target pupils dispersed across the school. Finding ways to ensure educational equity for pupils remains a priority at SAfE.
