Local Leaders of Governance

Are you an experienced governor? Do you have at least 3 years governance experience? Do you relish a challenge and believe in the importance of strong governance?

If the answer to the above is YES, please read further!

We Need You!

Skilled governors are needed to deliver change which will have impact in maintained Surrey schools. The Local Leaders of Governance (LLG) programme has now been running since the summer of 2020! LLGs have been deployed in over 30 maintained schools in Surrey during that time.

We have an increasing demand from schools for support and are now looking to expand the programme. We would like to hear from highly skilled and experienced governors who are willing to use their knowledge and expertise to help other local school governing bodies. Specifically, you will provide strategic support and mentoring to Surrey schools that need to improve current practice and/or increase future capacity to ensure high quality governance across the county.

We are seeking to increase diversity and inclusion in our team of Local Leaders of Governance and would particularly welcome applications from governors from diverse backgrounds including Black, Asian and minority ethnic and LGBTQ+ communities, and those with a disability.

Skills and Experience Required

  • Governors applying to join the LLG Programme will normally have had a minimum of 3 years’ experience of school governance, two of which will have been in the capacity of Chair or Vice-Chair of the Full Governing Body and/or Chair of a Committee, in a school, or academy, graded by Ofsted as Good or Outstanding. We would also welcome applications from Chairs or Vice-Chairs of Trust Boards.
  • You should have a proven track record of driving significant improvement in governance and school performance. You should be able to evidence strong governance practice and impact in your previous roles.
  • You will be confident in providing appropriate challenge to school leaders (including existing governors), have excellent interpersonal skills to manage sensitive and challenging situations, be able to work collaboratively and build strong working relationships with all stakeholders, and have the confidence to lead and contribute to courageous conversations.
