Building Strong Foundations from the Start 26-27
This three‑part professional development course is designed to help schools secure the essential building blocks of early learning, ensuring that pupils develop the strong foundations needed for long‑term success. Drawing on research‑informed practice and aligned with national guidance on early education, the programme focuses on three core areas: early mathematics, handwriting fluency and sentence construction. Each session explores how secure foundational knowledge reduces cognitive overload, strengthens retention and supports pupils—particularly those who are disadvantaged—to access more complex learning as they progress through Key Stage 1.
Participants will examine how early learning experiences shape future attainment and how curriculum and pedagogy can be aligned from EYFS to KS1 to ensure coherence and progression. Practical strategies are provided to help teachers develop number sense, automaticity in letter formation and confidence in sentence‑level grammar, all of which underpin effective writing and wider curriculum access.
Across the course, schools will identify clear, actionable steps to strengthen their provision, ensuring that every child—regardless of starting point—has the opportunity to build firm foundations for future learning.
