Closing the Gap: Strategic Planning and Monitoring Impact 26-27

A practical and evidence informed course designed to help school leaders use Pupil Premium funding strategically and effectively to improve outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in line with national guidance.

Struggling to show impact? Learn how to plan smarter, spend better and prove your Pupil Premium strategy is closing the gap—clearly and confidently.

  • Clear, actionable guidance on writing and evaluating a high quality Pupil Premium strategy, fully aligned with DfE expectations and rooted in evidence based practice.
  • Deepen understanding of what works for disadvantaged pupils, including effective classroom practice, targeted interventions, and the use of EEF research to guide decision making.
  • Strengthened leadership and governance oversight, with practical tools for monitoring impact, evaluating progress, and ensuring accountability for Pupil Premium and Pupil Premium Plus funding.

This programme equips school leaders, teachers and governors with the tools to close attainment gaps and maximise the impact of Pupil Premium funding. Informed by national guidance, DfE expectations and the Education Endowment Foundation evidence base, it focuses on designing, implementing and evaluating a strategy that delivers measurable improvements for disadvantaged pupils.

Participants will explore high-quality teaching as the primary strategy for closing the achievement gap, alongside the effective use of targeted interventions to address barriers to learning. The programme also considers the needs of Looked After Children and the strategic use of Pupil Premium Plus, with scope to involve the Virtual School.

A strong emphasis is placed on monitoring and impact. In the second session, leaders and governors will work collaboratively to practical approaches to using data, evaluating outcomes, and providing effective challenge and accountability.

By the end, participants will be confident in planning strategically, monitoring rigorously and demonstrating clear, sustained impact.

Intended improvement and/or evaluation of impact for pupils, including those with SEND and/or disadvantaged backgrounds

The programme aims to improve outcomes for disadvantaged pupils by ensuring funding is used purposefully to remove barriers to learning, strengthen teaching and provide targeted support where needed. Improved strategies will support better progress, attendance, engagement and achievement, including for SEND and Look After Children. Impact will be evaluated through robust monitoring, meaningful data analysis and clear measures of progress linked to the school’s strategic priorities.
