Building Strong Foundations from the Start 25-26

Unlock Lasting Learning from EYFS to KS1!

Join our three-part course to supercharge early maths, handwriting fluency, and sentence construction. Build firm foundations, reduce cognitive overload, and boost outcomes—especially for your most disadvantaged pupils. Don’t miss it!

Delivered in partnership with experts from Maths Hub and the National Handwriting Association.
For EYFS and KS1 practitioners, the three key benefits are:

1) Effective teaching strategies for Early Maths, handwriting and sentence writing.

2) Boosting pupil confidence in fluency and engagement.

3) Practical steps to enhance classroom practice and outcomes.

This course is designed to support primary teachers and leaders in evaluating and enhancing their curriculum and classroom practice from the early years through to the end of Key Stage 1, aligned with the Department for Education’s Strong Foundations in the Early Years guidance. Schools will have the opportunity to reflect on how early learning experiences establish the essential building blocks for future success and how this foundation is strengthened and sustained across Key Stage 1.

Delivered across three focused sessions, the course explores key elements of effective early education and progression into KS1:

Session 1: Early Mathematics – Supporting children to develop secure number sense and mathematical understanding.

Session 2: Securing Automaticity in Letter Formation and Handwriting – Ensuring fluency and confidence in transcription as a basis for effective writing.

Session 3: Embedding Understanding of Sentence Construction – Developing pupils’ grasp of sentence-level grammar to support writing fluency and composition.

Each session will provide practical, research-informed strategies to ensure that pupils acquire fluency in foundational knowledge before moving on to more complex concepts—reducing unnecessary cognitive load and supporting long-term retention and success.

A core aim of the course is to promote inclusive and effective practice that improves outcomes for all pupils. By ensuring strong curriculum and pedagogical alignment from the early years through KS1, schools can better support sustained progress, particularly for the most disadvantaged children. Following each session, schools will identify clear, actionable steps to refine and strengthen their provision, helping ensure every child is supported to build firm foundations for future learning.
