High Impact Teaching: Primary Geography Autumn 2022

The High Impact Teaching series supports teachers and leaders to develop subject knowledge in foundation subjects. This full-day geography session will develop understanding of progression, knowledge and assessment within geography. Using findings from Ofsted’s Research Review, delegates will learn how to lead and teach geography most effectively in their schools. There will also be an opportunity for practical fieldwork as part of the session.

The session will be led by Anthony Barlow from the Geographical Association who is also the author of Mastering Primary Geography.

The beliefs, knowledge, understanding and/or teaching practices this programme aims to address:

  • Developing depth of knowledge in planning, teaching and assessing primary geography

Intended Impact on practice:

  • Delegates will feel confident to plan curriculum content which is sequenced so that it develops pupils’ knowledge after initial explicit instruction.
  • Delegates will feel confident to teach and plan geography and support others to do so.
  • The geography curriculum being delivered in school will be suited to the needs of Ofsted and the pupils.
  • Delegates will understand progression within geography and how to assess pupils effectively

Intended improvement and/or evaluation of impact for pupils, including those with SEND and/or disadvantaged backgrounds:

  • Through an effectively planned and sequenced geography curriculum, all pupils will develop geographical vocabulary and be well prepared for geography in KS3.
