High Impact Teaching Series: Primary Science 24-25

This new programme is part of our evidence-informed High Impact Teaching Series aimed at supporting teachers to develop their teaching expertise specifically in Primary Science.

EEF Primary Science Guidance report recognises there is a stubborn gap in attainment between socio-economically disadvantaged pupils and their classmates. This gap is also reflected in pupils’ participation in science, with those from disadvantaged backgrounds far less likely to progress to further study in science subjects when it is no longer compulsory. They make 6 recommendations underpinned by high quality evidence. This programme will support teachers to develop their teaching expertise based on the recommendations by developing their understanding of the research, modelling key strategies and supporting teachers’ deliberate practice back in school so that it leads to lasting change in their classroom and improved outcomes in science.

The beliefs, knowledge and or teaching practices this programme aims to address:

  • Develop teachers knowledge of strategies to: Develop pupils’ scientific vocabulary, guide pupils to work scientifically, encourage pupils to explain their thinking and relate new learning to relevant real-world contexts.

Intended Impact on Practice:

  • Support teachers to make meaningful improvements to primary science teaching that build pupils’ curiosity, critical thinking and understanding of the world.

Intended improvement and/or evaluation of impact for pupils, including those with SEND and/or disadvantaged backgrounds:

  • Help practitioners build on their existing expertise with a view to supporting them to close the attainment gap and cultivate positive pupil attitudes towards science.
