High Impact Teaching Series: Reading, Writing and Oracy 24-25

This series of CPD sessions will support English leaders and teachers to improve their practice in the teaching of English with a focus on teaching and learning, meta-cognition and supporting under-served pupils.

Each session in this series will have a specific focus. There will be 3 reading focused sessions: reading for pleasure; reading for meaning; reading fluency. There will be 3 writing focused session: spelling & transcription; modelling & metacognition in writing; grammar in context, editing & feedback. The final two sessions will focus on oracy and vocabulary.

Sessions will all be based on current research, pedagogy and classroom practice allowing teachers to embed ideas into their own teaching and across their schools.

This course has also been accredited by the Chartered College of Teaching as meeting the required standard to support teachers wanting to complete the Chartered Status, Development of Teaching Practice Award. For teachers wanting to sign up to the full programme and the Development of Teaching Practice, you must be a member of the Chartered College of Teaching but we are offering 10 funded places for maintained schools in the Development of Teaching Practice Award assessment unit meaning you pay just the cost of the High Impact Teaching programme and if you complete and pass the accredited award you will also earn 20 credits towards Chartered Teacher Status. Teachers will be further educated on best practice for the classroom linked to recent research and pedagogy. Each session will include strategies that can be embedded into existing practice to meet the needs of pupils and school context.

Intended Impact on Practice:

Changes to practice will support pupils to make the best possible progress in English. Teachers will be aware of current research and how to best meet the needs of all pupils in the teaching of reading, writing and oracy.

Intended improvement and/or evaluation of impact for pupils, including those with SEND and/or disadvantaged backgrounds:

Changes to practice will support pupils to make the best possible progress in English through quality first teaching that supports pupils of all abilities and underserved learners. Improving pupils’ reading fluency and oracy has been particularly linked to improving progress of underserved learners.
