New Headteacher Induction Programme 26-27

SAfE is committed to working with and developing exceptional leaders who transform schools and secure improved outcomes for all children and young people. We believe that effective leadership is the key to creating school environments where all can thrive. We are proud of our culture of collaboration, and we are dedicated to fostering partnerships that enable headteachers to lead with confidence and clarity.

This induction programme uniquely provides new headteachers with targeted leadership development, real‑world practical learning, and early access to a strong professional network that offers sustained support throughout their first year in role.
The Schools Alliance for Excellence Induction Programme supports new and acting headteachers across all phases of schools during their first year in role, recognising both the rewards and the complexities this period brings. The programme provides structured opportunities to develop leadership capability, deepen understanding of key responsibilities, and build professional relationships with new and experienced headteachers. In doing so, participants establish a strong, supportive network that underpins their ongoing leadership journey.

The programme begins with the New Headteacher Welcome Breakfast in early September. This free event offers a formal introduction to Surrey’s educational landscape and provides the opportunity to meet fellow new headteachers, the SAfE team and the key stakeholders who will work alongside you throughout your headship. It sets the foundation for a year of structured support and professional engagement.

Following the breakfast, participants attend six in‑person sessions across the academic year. Sessions 1 and 6 are held at the SAfE Headquarters and focus on leadership thinking, reflection and professional learning. Sessions 2, 3, 4 and 5 take place in phase‑specific host schools and explore essential aspects of headship including finance, HR, governance and curriculum. Each of these sessions includes time with the host headteacher, a learning walk to observe practice, expert input on the key theme and facilitated discussion to deepen understanding and apply learning to individual contexts.

This induction programme supports headteachers to articulate and refine a clear vision for their school, understand statutory responsibilities, develop effective strategies for managing and supporting staff, and become familiar with the wide range of support available for school leaders. Through structured sessions and meaningful networking opportunities, new headteachers are equipped with the knowledge, confidence and professional connections needed to lead with impact from day one.
