New Headteacher Induction Programme 23-24

New Headteachers are warmly invited to join the New Headteachers’ Induction Programme 2023-24, run by Schools Alliance for Excellence (SAfE), in partnership with Surrey County Council.  SAfE is committed to developing outstanding leaders who can transform schools and ultimately improve outcomes for children and young people.  We are passionate about supporting collaborative partnerships.

SAfE is responsible for the professional development of new headteachers and this induction programme gives you the opportunity to develop your leadership and establish relationships with other headteachers, building your own professional network.  The programme is cross-phase, so new headteachers from a rich mix of settings come together for these sessions.

We begin the programme with a New Headteacher Welcome Breakfast.  ALL new Headteachers in Surrey are invited to attend.  Join us to meet other headteachers new in post and/or new to Surrey and to meet the SAfE Team and key members of the Surrey County Council Education Department.

The dates of the programme are set out below.  The programme consists of six ‘in person’ sessions.  Sessions 1 & 6 will be at the SAfE Headquarters and will focus on Leadership thinking and learning.  Sessions 2, 3, 4, & 5 will be held in a phase specific school and will include input on a key element of Headship; Finance, HR, Governance & Curriculum.  These sessions will include time with the HT, a learning walk, expert input on the key element, and facilitated discussion about the topic and other relevant issues.

The New Headteacher Induction Programme 2023-24 is facilitated by experienced headteachers and will enable participants to:

  • Clarify and develop their vision in a long-term strategy
  • Develop strategies and approaches which can be used with senior leaders, staff and governors
  • Practise their coaching skills and approaches to difficult conversations
  • Develop a shared language about leadership and learning
  • Understand the statutory aspects of headship, including safeguarding, governance, personnel, inclusion and financial management.

In addition to these 6 sessions, each New HT will be assigned a professional mentor.  Mentors will be current HTs who are matched to New HTs and will work with the New HT for the equivalent of ½ day per term over the year in a format agreed between mentor and mentee.

The beliefs, knowledge, understanding and/or teaching practices this programme aims to address:

  • Understand the statutory aspects of headship
  • Development of strategies and approaches to management of staff, including holding difficult conversations
  • Support with developing the vision of the school
