Primary English Leads Conference Autumn 24

The annual Primary English Conference is aimed at English subject leaders and those passionate about teaching English to learn from experts in the field to support leaders work on key Surrey priorities.

Pupil outcomes in writing continue to be lower than reading in all primary phases of education and underserved pupils particularly underperform compared with their peers. The Ofsted English subject report recommends that writing curriculums ensure pupils secure the foundational knowledge and skills through practice before moving to complex tasks so we will be focusing on the teaching of writing with two experts this year and as always our invited author will inspire our love of reading to motivate our young writers.
English specialist and EEF Head of content and engagement, Alex Quigley, will lead the morning with how to close the writing gap through practice of core knowledge and skills.
Professor of Education, Teresa Cremin, will follow the morning session exploring her research on writing for pleasure and how we nurture children’s enjoyment of writing.
Award winning author, MG Leonard will close the conference sharing how her own childhood passion for writing stories has made her a successful children’s author.
This year’s conference will support teachers to raise the standards of writing and children’s enthusiasm for this subject.

The beliefs, knowledge and or teaching practices this programme aims to address:

  • Improved understanding of current research, theory of reading and writing and how this relates to practice including motivating children to write for pleasure.

Intended Impact on Practice:

  • Leaders will feel empowered to share key messages in their own schools.
  • Changes to practice will support pupils to make the best possible progress in English.

Intended improvement and/or evaluation of impact for pupils, including those with SEND and/or disadvantaged backgrounds:

  • Changes to practice will support pupils to make the best possible progress in English.
