Reflections On: AI, AI, AI?!

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably noticed that artificial intelligence (AI) is a hot topic these days. Whether it’s on LinkedIn, Twitter, or the news, AI is everywhere, and its potential applications span across various industries, particularly education. While the benefits of AI are impressive, the introduction of any new technology comes with its own set of challenges and concerns about privacy, protection, and data security.

Despite these concerns, school staff are already exploring AI, especially generative AI, to aid in their daily tasks. A recent Teacher Tapp survey revealed that over half of the respondents had used AI at least once for their work, with English and primary school teachers being the most frequent users. As AI continues to evolve, it’s crucial to ensure its use in education is both beneficial and secure.

Where do we start? Perfect prompting!

ChatGPT is likely a tool you’re familiar with and may have even experimented with. This generative platform allows users to interact with a virtual assistant to support various creative tasks. But how can we maximize its potential? The key lies in crafting precise prompts, requiring a deeper understanding of AI’s capabilities and limitations and ensuring that queries are clear, specific, and contextually relevant.

So, what does this look like in practice?

Bad Prompt: Tell me about World War I.

Good Prompt: Discuss the main causes of World War I, including the roles of militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism, and explain how these factors led to the outbreak of the war in 1914.

The bad prompt lacks focus and context, potentially resulting in a response that misses key details. The improved prompt specifies the factors leading to World War I, guiding the AI to provide a more structured and relevant explanation.

ChatGPT is just the start. There are already opportunities to utilise AI for reducing teacher workload, providing personalised learning and support, from assessment through to professional development and routine automation across a variety of different administrative tasks. Without the time, guidance and the strategy for how to introduce such elements, schools can be missing out on the powerful opportunities that AI can bring. To fully unlock and realise the potential of AI, schools need a clear strategy, guidance, and dedicated time to integrate tools effectively and with purpose. With thoughtful consideration, schools can pave the way for a more dynamic and responsive educational environment.

Launching the AI in Primary Education Project – A SAfE x eduthing Collaboration
At eduthing, we’re not just a managed service provider; we’re a forward-thinking EdTech company passionate about transforming education through technology. We believe in the profound impact that advancements such as AI can have within schools, enhancing experiences for students and educators alike inside and outside the classroom.

This academic year, we are thrilled to announce the launch of our “AI in Primary Education Project,” in collaboration with Schools Alliance for Excellence. This year-long initiative is designed to integrate AI into primary education in a meaningful and impactful way, driven by the needs and insights of schools themselves.

What can you expect if you take part?

Our project is structured around several key themes, each addressing different aspects of AI integration in schools. Just some of the areas that we will dive deeper into are:

  • AI for Workload Reduction
  • AI for Teaching and Learning
  • AI for Assessment

Professional Development and Collaboration

Throughout this project, we will offer a series of sessions focusing on these themes, providing educators with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively implement AI in their schools. Additionally, there will be a launch event and a final impact presentation towards the end of the academic year, showcasing the progress and celebrating the successes of participating schools.

Our goal is to work closely with educators to create a tangible impact within their own settings. By integrating AI into daily routines and teaching practices, we aim to not only improve efficiency but also enhance the overall educational experience for students.
